Dealer Tour steams through New York

NEW YORK, NY (BRAIN) Thursday July 19 2012 6:22 AM MT—The BRAIN New York City Dealer Tour's second day included some triple-digit temperatures, an uncontested visit to Coney Island's Nathan's Frankfurters, and a late-day cloudburst that brought a bit of adventure to our 40-mile jaunt.

Along the way, we found another diverse group of retailers — four shops that had little in common other than a desire to serve bike lovers.

R&A Cycles

It’s been a flat 2012 at R&A Cycles—and that suits the retailer’s Albert Cabbad just fine.

“This year has been kind of awkward,” said Cabbad, son of R&A founder and owner Philip Cabbad. “We took big steps back to change our way going forward. … But I’m content; I’m fine. I’m having a good year.”

The 36-year-old shop, an early adopter of e-commerce that has become a major online seller, is bringing to fruition two key projects aimed at boosting its fortunes in the long term: A revamp of its website—the initial stage of which was set to launch the day of Bicycle Retailer’s visit Wednesday--and the consolidation of its myriad storage spaces into a central warehouse as large as 20,000 square feet to, in part, streamline processing of web orders.

Meanwhile in R&A’s storefront in Brooklyn’s Park Slope neighborhood, Cabbad keeps refreshing product displays every three months, and separate rooms segment product for high-end road bikes, tri gear and family bikes.

Pointing out R&A’s variety of hybrid, kids’ and flat-bar road bikes, Cabbad commented: “No one is buying a $10,000 bike without owning one of these first.”

Roy’s Sheepshead Cycle

We dropped in on this retailer at Sheepshead Bay, which separates Brooklyn from Coney Island, to catch up with owner Allen Trepel—a fool’s errand, it turned out.

The silver-haired Trepel, who has run the 81-year-old shop since 1977, was far too busy with business on the shop floor despite it being a sweltering Wednesday morning. He fielded phone call after phone call. Then a young woman looking to buy her race road bike commanded his attention. He started walking her through Roy’s Sheepshead’s myriad brands (it’d be easier to list the bike lines Trepel doesn’t carry than the ones he does).

Fortunately, Frank Barrios could spare a couple minutes to talk to us. Barrios, New York-area account manager for Cycling Sports Group, was moving about Roy’s 1,500-square-foot expansion designed as a Cannondale-exclusive store-within-a-store.

The new space still needs some finishing touches, but the open layout and new accessibility of product—many of the brand’s accessories previously were set behind counters rather than on the shop floor, for instance—have already shown dividends, according to Barrios. “Clothing and accessories have doubled over the past few months,” he said.

Keith Trepel had little more time for the BRAIN crew than his father did. “I’m on vacation starting tomorrow, and I just have to finish this order. I told my wife I already left,” he said.

Still, he said business is strong at the family concern, with sales up 10 percent or more each of the past six years.

With that, we walked outside to our bikes, and to say goodbye to our shop owner/host, who was on the sidewalk attending to a test-ride for a customer who hadn’t ridden a bike in 30 years. Trepel gave him an encouraging push on the saddle and sent him on his way. Head down, he gave a cursory wave as he passed us and headed back into his shop.

Bicycle Habitat

After years of advocacy work and pushing for more bike lanes and bike access on city bridges with local advocacy group Transportation Alterntives, Charlie McCorkell is seeing the fruits of his labor—more New Yorkers on bikes. And his one-year-old Brooklyn location is meeting this new demand. The shop’s sales have steadily grown since it opened in May 2011, and many of the customers are first-time adult riders.

A few blocks from Prospect Park, and surrounded by freshly painted bike lanes, the 3,000-square-foot Park Slope store serves the community’s growing commuter and recreational rider crowd. Libby McComb and Emily Samstag co-manage the store where one third of the 13 employees are women—something that has helped it connect with female consumers. Bicycle Habitat also sponsors two women’s road racing teams.

McComb, who worked at Bicycle Habitat’s Soho store for nine years before moving over to the new location, said from the onset, they aimed to be an all-around shop. The Brooklyn shop carries some of the same brands as Soho—Trek and Specialized are its main suppliers—but sprinkles in more utility product like Yuba cargo bikes.

Brightly lit, well-merchandised and with visible signage throughout, it’s an inviting shopping environment for the first-time shopper. Another way it feeds interest from walkers by: one of its service stands is in the front of the store where walkers by can see how a bike is repaired.

Bicycle Habitat is one of New York’s longest standing shops; McCorkell opened the Soho store in 1978.

Bespoke Bicycles

Stepping into Bespoke's tiny Fort Greene showroom feels like walking into the living room (or the walk-in closet) belonging to a connoisseur of a very particular style of bike. Think of lugged frames, leather saddles, waxed cotton bags, hammered aluminum fenders and hubs polished to a mirror's shine.

Longtime Bicycle Habitat employee Cassidy Vare opened the new store about three years ago. Bespoke carries complete bikes from Raleigh (the Clubman, a steel touring bike, is a favorite) but prefers to put together custom porteur and randonneur bikes starting with Velo Orange, Rawland and Soma frames.

To paraphrase Mark Twain, you can swing a cat in Bespoke's showroom, but not without considerable damage to the cat. Service is done in the basement. After moving in, Vare realized that the stairway was too narrow to carry a bike down, so he cut a hole in the showroom floor and installed a pulley system to lower bikes into the store's bowels.

Manager Jonathan Pastir said the store's clientele is often young professionals with an appreciation for art, design and history.

"They are people who understand bike history and appreciate classic bikes," he said. Many work in fashion or graphic arts. "They want to specify every part and they don't care if it costs $4,000," he said.

Suppliers offer framebuilders special deals at March's Philly Bike Expo

PHILADELPHIA (BRAIN) — The Philly Bike Expo has moved from its traditional fall dates to spring, but organizers said it will remain a meeting place for handmade builders as well as cycling enthusiasts. At this year's show — and prior to the show — exhibiting framebuilders are being offered an array of B2B purchase offers.

In previous editions, the show's organizers offered early admission to retailers so they could conduct B2B business in a more relaxed setting. Show director Bina Bilinkey said few retailers took advantage of the program so it is no longer offered. She said many retailers still attend during regular hours. "That is what makes our show unique — the opportunity for industry and consumer-facing interaction in one place, at one time," Bilenky said.

Registered media are allowed into the show an hour early (at 9 a.m.), she said.

Framebuilders are being offered a variety of special programs this year. For example:

Schwalbe is offering a free set of tires to the first 20 builders who sign up for the show; builders have access to OEM pricing at schwalbetires.com/dealer-information.
Industry 9 is offering discounts on its wheels to builders who include the wheels on their show bikes.
Ritchey Design is offering free COMP cockpit components for use on show bikes, and 40% off wholesale princing on wheels and forks for show bikes.
Appleman Bicycles is offering discounts on its 2XR cranks for show bikes, with custom colors and sizing available.
Merry Cycles is offering 30% off Tange tubing and Long Shen lugs, dropouts and fork crowns for show bikes.
Titanium Joe is offering a 20% discount on materials (on orders totaling over $1,000 made during February) for companies building bikes for the show.
Fairing Industrial, aka: Bicycle Frame Depot, will be offering free shipping until the end of March for exhibiting framebuilders.
Photographer Brad Quartuccio will be on-site doing framebuilder bike portraits, which can be accessed after the show.

Philly Bike Expo also announced an additional sponsor and expansion to its Framebuilder Inclusivity Scholarship program, which started in 2019. Industry Nine has joined founding sponsor SRAM. Paragon Machine Works is supporting the initiative with its framebuilding parts and accessories. Four new builders, three from the USA and one from Mexico, will show bikes at the Expo: Significant Other Bikes, Shovel Research, Studio Basica, and Artefact x NMW.

Lost Paddle plans two (e)revolution shows for 2024

Company adds Orange County, California, event in April.

PARK CITY, Utah (BRAIN) — Lost Paddle Events will produce two e-bike events next year: a second edition of its (e)revolution Denver show in late May preceded by a new outdoor trade/consumer show in Orange County, California, in April.

The California event will be held at Irvine's Great Park, a 500-acre venue with off-road and paved e-bike demo spaces. The April 5-7 event will feature outdoor exhibition space and is timed to take place between other regional demo events, allowing exhibitors to conveniently transport their demo assets between events, Lost Paddle's Lance Camisasca told BRAIN.

Camisasca said many exhibitors at the inaugural (e)revolution show, held indoors at Denver's Colorado Convention Center, said they would prefer an outdoor event, allowing use of their outdoor expo assets and outdoor e-bike demos.

"We've run three successful outdoor Big Gear Shows (at Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah), so we know how to do it," Camisasca said. "It lets (exhibitors) drive up, set up, and enjoy, which is what people like to do, like they do at Sea Otter and Unbound," he said.

The Irvine event will conclude about 11 days before the Sea Otter Classic opens in Monterey, California. The Denver event will open about five days after the conclusion of the Bentonville Bike Fest in Arkansas.

"For both events we really had to thread the needle so we didn't step on any toes and exhibitors could move from one event to the other," Camisasca said.

Besides the demo opportunities at The Great Park, there are more extensive riding areas available nearby and the event will organize guided rides at several off-site locations during the event. "We'll have former pros and other celebrities to lead the rides," he said.

The Denver (e)revolution show, May 31-June 2, is being co-located with Big Paddle's The Big Gear Show at Denver's Civic Center Park. The events are part of the Outside Festival, a multi-day consumer festival organized by BRAIN's parent, Outside Interactive, with the state of Colorado. The Denver (e)revolution will be trade-only on May 31 and open to trade and consumers on the final two weekend days.

Both events will include e-bike education sessions for retailers and consumers.

Eurobike attracts 35,000 trade visitors and 32,000 consumers

FRANKFURT (BRAIN) — Eurobike, which closed Sunday after its weekend consumer event, attracted 34,750 trade visitors and 31,780 consumer visitors over its four days. Both figures were an increase over last year. Also on the increase: exhibiting companies, of which more than 1,900 showed up, up from about 1,500 last year.

Stefan Reisinger, the managing director of event organizer fairnamic GmbH, said “This year’s show seamlessly followed on the heels of last year’s success at the premiere in the new venue. We were able to make progress both quantitatively and qualitatively and have great momentum behind us. The charisma and drawing power that the industry currently needs could be found here in Frankfurt. This will make the Eurobike a driver of the transportation revolution and put even more focus on bicycles, e-bikes, and light electric mobility.”

The business visitors count was up 3% over 2022's show; consumer visitors were up 16%. Visitors came to Messe Frankfurt from a total of 122 countries, up from 105 last year. Significantly, there were more exhibitors and visitors from China and Taiwan this year because of reduced COVID-19 travel restrictions in those nations.

Next year's event will be held again at the Messe Frankfurt from Wednesday, July 3, to Sunday, July 7, 2024. The event will be open to the public on the weekend once again.

Recumbent Cycle-Con event has a new name, expanded focus

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (BRAIN) — The trade and consumer event formerly known as Recumbent Cycle-Con has been renamed as Cycle-Con to reflect more openness to the conventional cycling community. The event will be held next month for the first time in two years because of COVID-related cancelations.

The Dayton, Ohio, event is billed as "North America's largest alternative cycle exp," and was purchased by WizWheelz in June. WhizWheels is the manufacturer of TerraTrike and GreenSpeed recumbents.

“Cutting edge cycling brands and retailers are realizing there’s a whole new customer out there,” said Mark Crews, the CEO of WizWheelz. “We hear time and time again that people are intimidated to go into a bike shop. These people just want to get out and have fun, and they’re willing to invest in the right solution.”

The event is Oct. 7-9 at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Dayton. The demo-driven event includes a half-mile paved and gravel demo loop. Beyond the demo track, Ohio’s Miami Valley offers over 340 miles of paved recreation paths for riders of all abilities. Friday, Oct. 7, is an industry-focused day, reserved for vendors and retailers. Saturday and Sunday are open to the general public.

“We want to welcome more people with various cycling interests and at the same time expose them to recumbents and trikes,” said Crews. “Recumbents and trikes might be something they've never considered before for themselves, or for a loved one.”

Bosch plans event for industry and consumers at Philly Bike Expo

PHILADELPHIA (BRAIN) — Bosch eBike Systems will conduct an hour-long session at next month's Philly Bike Expo, aimed at dealers, consumers and other industry members.

"We'll be sharing some of our newest releases in product and connectivity while answering all of your technical questions," the company said.

The presentation will be by Bosch's Colby Weber and Stephen "Phunky" Proffitt, who both teach the Bosch Certification program to bicycle dealers across the country.

The Bosch event is Saturday, Oct. 29 at 3 p.m.

Cycle of Influence Summit tailors agenda for a post-pandemic industry

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (BRAIN) — After its planned launch was interrupted by COVID for two years, the first Cycle of Influence Summit will be held next month in this fast-growing cycling town. The get-together will have an agenda that organizers have modified substantially since the first planned event in 2020, said show director Sergio Bravo.

“It has evolved a lot,” since the first plan, he said.

The show is Sept. 6-8 at the Record conference center in downtown Bentonville. Bravo is offering a 10% discount code for BRAIN readers: brain10COI. The code expires Friday.

When Bravo was planning the 2020 event he focused the agenda on big pre-pandemic issues including the trend of power sports retailers stocking e-bikes, for example.

While that remains an interesting topic, other issues have risen to the top as e-bike sales have increasingly become a big part of most IBDs' business. In a more mature e-bike market, safety and legal issues are top of mind for many in the industry.

“Now every shop is trying to get their hands on e-bikes to sell. The new issue is that there are tons of new riders on bikes and we need to ask, ‘what are safety provisions for those people? How do we corral these new riders to teach them and educate them, give them knowledge, so they don’t just go as fast as they can down the street and the trails?”

Speakers on safety and legal issues around e-bikes will include Steven Sheffield of Bosch, attorney Steven Hansen, and retailer Chris Nolte, owner of Propel e-bike stores in New York and California.

Besides the new focus on e-bike safety and regulations, the conference agenda includes a new look at supply chain and domestic production.

“Everyone has done supply chain (as a topic at industry conferences). We wanted to focus on USA production … we do have to fix the supply chain but we also need to manufacture more here,” he said.

Speakers on supply chain include Drew Medlock, the CEO of Allied Cycle Works; Tim Lane, the president of Digit Bikes; Darren Murphy, president of Push Industries; and Rick Adams, the CEO of LeMond Bicycles. The event also will include a visit to the Allied factory in Bentonville.

Speakers on the future of the IBD include HLC CEO Pat McGinnis, Signa Sports' North American VP, Hap Seliga, and Beeline Connect's chief revenue officer, Neil Macc.

Bravo said his conversations with industry members since 2020 convinced him that there was a demand for a summit, as an alternative to a conference format. “A summit is more about a conversation, a meeting of minds. A conference in my opinion is more about a podium with a speaker and an hour-long speech with a slide show that was shown at 10 other events that year.”

Bravo said the Cycle of Influence Summit will include “a more uniquely casual, friendly networking gathering, where you are able to gain some knowledge, through networking, panels, and discussion. There is not a heavy scheduled-filled conference of events where you spend the day going from one place to another.”

Besides the visit to Allied, the event will include time to ride Bentonville's growing network of trails.

Bravo has owned an industry marketing company, Smith Smith & Smith, since 1989, for clients in and out of the bike industry and other active lifestyle markets.

Virtual e-bike conference set for Oct. 11-15
